Pork Tamagodon

A quick Japanese style pork and egg rice bowl made with sliced pork, onions and udon sauce. An easy 20 minute meal that is perfect for busy days.

Ingredients

  • 2 packets of sliced pork shoulder
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Udon sauce (store bought)
  • Mirin
  • Water
  • Cooking oil
  • Spring onions
  • Sesame seeds
  • Cooked rice

Instructions

  1. Mix the udon sauce, mirin and water in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. Heat a little oil in a pot and sauté the sliced onion until soft and fragrant.
  3. Add the sliced pork.
  4. Pour in the udon sauce mixture and bring everything to a boil.
  5. Once the pork is cooked through, pour in the beaten eggs.
  6. Turn off the heat and let the eggs gently set.
  7. Serve the pork, onions and egg over hot rice. Finish with spring onions and sesame seeds.
  8. Ready in less than 20 minutes.

💜 Tips for Kids

If your children are not big fans of onions, you can slice them very thinly so they soften more into the sauce. My kids enjoyed the pork and egg, but somehow the onions were the only thing left in the bowls.

📝 Amanda's Notes

You can easily substitute the pork with chicken if you prefer. Sliced chicken thigh or breast will work well with the same sauce.

If you don’t have udon sauce, you can use your usual Japanese style rice bowl sauce instead.
