A simple Japanese comfort meal that’s light, nourishing and incredibly easy to make. When I want something warm but not too heavy, this is one of my favourite meals. Grilled salmon, fluffy rice, bonito flakes and furikake are brought together with a comforting bowl of warm tea. It’s simple enough for busy weekdays, yet satisfying enough that all four of my kids finished everything.
If your little ones are new to ochazuke, start by pouring less tea over the rice so it isn’t too soupy or use a milder flavour tea bags. My kids actually enjoyed the mild flavour and all four of them finished their bowls.
I used Chamoment instead of the traditional green tea because it’s health benefits. It’s naturally caffeine free, making it a lovely option for both adults and children. The flavour is light and comforting and it pairs beautifully with the salmon.
You can also swap the salmon for grilled fish, shredded chicken or even leftover cooked fish, depending on what you already have at home. As always, don’t be afraid to make it your own. 🤍
A quick, one pan family meal that’s savoury, saucy and packed with tender beef and chewy udon. Perfect for busy days when you want something easy that the whole family will enjoy.
A comforting homemade Pan Mee inspired by one of my favourite childhood hawker meals. Made with anchovy soup, goji leaves and fishballs, topped with crispy anchovies, savoury minced pork, shiitake mushrooms and black fungus. Serve with sambal belacan for that extra kick.
A nourishing homemade chicken soup stock made with simple ingredients and slow simmered goodness. Prepare once, cook multiple times. Perfect as a base for quick, comforting family meals on busy days.
